Isabella of France, Queen Consort of Edward II of England.Artist: Henry Colburn
Isabella of France, Queen Consort of Edward II of England. Isabella (c1295-1358) was the daughter of Philip IV of France and Jeanne of Navarre. She married Edward II in 1307, but was neglected by him as he was more iterested in his favourites, notably Piers Gaveston and the Despensers. Eventually, in alliance with her lover, Roger Mortimer, Earl of March, she raised an army that overthrew Edward. Isabella and Mortimer ruled as regents until her son by Edward, the future Edward III attained his majority. When he did, he had Mortimer executed for treason but spared his mother.
