George S Patton, US Army General, c1943-1944.
George S Patton, US Army General, c1943-1944. Patton (1885-1945) was one of the most famous, colourful and controversial American generals of the Second World War. He fought in North Africa and Italy and then in Western Europe after the D-Day landings. A firm believer in a stategy of high speed attack and manoeuvre, his Third Army famously got so far ahead of its lines of supply during the campaign to liberate France that its tanks ran out of petrol in Alsace. Patton was killed in a car acident in Germany six months after the war ended.
