Fortress gardens and the Shwedagon Pagoda, Rangoon, Burma, c1900s(?).Artist: Underwood & Underwood
Fortress gardens and the Shwedagon Pagoda, Rangoon, Burma, c1900s(?). Stereoscopic card. Buddhist tradition holds that the Shwedagon Pagoda was built before the Buddha died in 486 BC, but archaeologists believe its construction dates from between the 6th and 10th century. The height of the stupa was increased on several occasions, reaching its current 98 metres (320 feet) in the 18th century.
