Dedicated to Shiva and his consort, the princess Meenakshi, the temple was begun in 1560 and completed around 120 years later. A prominent feature of southern Indian Hindu temple architecture, gopurams are gateway towers richly decorated with sculpture depicting scenes from Hindu mythology.
