English boxer Tom Cribb (1781-1848) held the English heavyweight championship from 1808 until 1822, when he retired. He fought Tom Molineaux (1784-1818) for the championship twice. In this meeting, at Thistleton Gap, he won by a knockout in the 11th round. Molineaux was a former American slave and was the first black man to fight for the heavyweight title.
