Buckfast Abbey, north view, Devon.Artist: J Salmon
Buckfast Abbey, north view, Devon. Buckfast Abbey was founded in 1018. It was run by the Cistercians until it was left in ruins after it was closed in 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. In 1882 six Benedictine monks from France arrived at Buckfast and began the rebuilding of the abbey, a process that continued until it was completed in 1937.
