James J Braddock, Irish-American boxer, 1938.
James J Braddock, Irish-American boxer, 1938. Braddock (1905-1974) shocked the boxing world when he defeated World Heavyweight Champion Max Baer on points in 1935. He was regarded as a journeyman fighter and an easy opponent for Baer, who hardly bothered to train for the fight. Braddock lost the title in his only defence when he was knocked out by Joe Louis in the 8th round on 22 June 1937. A Churchman's Cigarettes picture card.
