The Battle of the Nile, Egypt, 1 August 1798 (c1857). Artist: J Rogers
The Battle of the Nile, Egypt, 1 August 1798 (c1857). The battle was fought at night in the Abu Qir Bay near Alexandria. Admiral Lord Nelson found the French fleet at anchor and attacked. The climax of the battle came at ten in the evening when the French flagship 'Orient' exploded, the moment shown here. The victory secured British control of the Mediterranean. From England's Battles by Sea and Land, volume IV, by Lieutenant Colonel William Freke Williams, published by the London Printing and Publishing Company, 1857.
