'Garrick and his Wife', 1757 (19th century). David Garrick (1717-1779) was the most popular actor of his time. He was also a playwright, theatre manager and producer and one of the most influential figures in 18th century British theatre. In 1749 he married Eva Marie Veigel (1724-1822), a German dancer. Hogarth's original painting of them, of which this engraving is a copy, is in the Royal Collection at Winsor Castle.
