'He might have been a King', 1871. Caricature of Joao Carlos, 1st Duke of Saldanha (1790-1876), Portuguese soldier and politician. Saldanha fought against the French during the Peninsular War. He was on eof the dominant and most colourful characters in Portuguese politics in the 19th century, leading seven coups d'etat and serving as Prime Minister on three occasions. In 1871 he was sent to London as his country's ambassador.
