William Pitt Amherst, 1st Earl Amherst, Governor-General of India, 19th century. Amherst (1773-1857) was sent as Ambassador to China in 1816, but as he refused to perform the ceremony of kow-tow, which Europeans considered degrading, he was not permitted to enter Peking.
