Edward I, King of England. Artist: Smith
Edward I, King of England. Edward (1239-1307) was popularly known as Longshanks because of his 6 foot 2 inch (1.88 m) frame, and the Hammer of the Scots. He reigned from 1272 to 1307, ascending the throne of England on November 21, 1272 after the death of his father, Henry III. He conquered Wales between 1276 and 1284 and oversaw the building of a series of great castles in the conquered territory. In the 1290s he embarked on a series of wars against Scotland and died at Burgh-by-Sands in Cumbria in 1307 while on his way to conduct another campaign against Robert the Bruce.
