'The Mountain of the Lion', 19th century. View of the monument to commemorate the place where William II of the Netherlands was knocked from his horse by a musket ball to the shoulder during the Battle of Waterloo, 8 June 1815. On the top of the large conical artificial hill is a memorial in the form of a statue of a lion (looking towards France), called La Butte du Lion. It is 140 feet high - including the Lion and Pedestal 200 feet. The circumference at the base is 1680 feet. The inclination is 34 degrees, and 226 stairs lead up to the summit.
