Gateway at Thorpe Hall, Longthorpe, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, 1928. Artist: Nathaniel Lloyd
Gateway at Thorpe Hall, Longthorpe, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, 1928. The south gateway to the walled garden at Thorpe Hall. Eagles surmount the posts, and the niches on the gate piers are filled with vases, crowned with Ionic capitals on pedestals, an example of Mannerist ornament typical of the period when the Hall was built, c1653-6. The wrought iron gates have seen better days, and weeds grow from the stonework.
