First Floor Gallery, Medieval Merchant's House, French Street, Southampton, Hampshire, 1988. Artist: Paul Highnam
The first floor gallery in the Medieval Merchant's House, 58 French Street, Southampton, Hampshire, 1988, looking towards the upper chamber rooms. The house has been returned to its mid 14th century appearance by the removal of later floors, partititions and fireplaces. The house is one of the earliest surviving merchant's houses in England. It was constructed around 1290 as both a place of business and residence for John Fortin, a wealthy merchant who traded with merchants from Bordeaux, France.
