First Floor, Medieval Merchant's House, French Street, Southampton, Hampshire, 1988. Artist: Paul Highnam
A passage and room on the first floor of the Medieval Merchant's House, 58 French Street, Southampton, Hampshire, 1988. It is possible to see where some of the timbers have been spliced together during repair work. The house is one of the earliest surviving merchant's houses in England. It was constructed around 1290 as both a place of business and residence for John Fortin, a wealthy merchant who traded with merchants from Bordeaux, France.
