Interior of the hall in the Medieval Merchant's House, 58 French Street, Southampton, Hampshire, 1988; showing stairs to the first floor. The stairs lead from the medieval hall which is open to the roof to two bedrooms on the first floor.The house is one of the earliest surviving merchant's houses in England. It was constructed around 1290 as both a place of business and residence for John Fortin, a wealthy merchant who traded with merchants from Bordeaux, France.
