Mary Pickford (1892-1979), Canadian actress, c1930s-c1940s. Pickford began her film career in 1909 working for DW Griffith. By the time she was 20 she had already appeared in 176 films and she would soon add writing and producing to her list of accomplishments. In 1920, along with Griffith, Douglas Fairbanks and Charles Chaplin, she helped to establish United Artists Pictures, a studio that was responsible for many great films for the next 60-plus years before being bought by MGM. She was also one of the 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
