Screens passage, Medieval Merchant's House, French Street, Southampton, Hampshire, 1988. Artist: Paul Highnam
View along the screens passage at the timber framed Medieval Merchant's House, 58 French Street, Southampton, Hampshire, 1988, showing some of the pieces of reproduction furniture and furnishings created to evoke the character of a medieval merchant's house. The house is one of the earliest surviving merchant's houses in England. It was constructed around 1290 as both a place of business and residence for John Fortin, a wealthy merchant who traded with merchants from Bordeaux, France.
