Reproduction Furniture at Medieval Merchant's House, French Street, Southampton, Hampshire, 1988. Artist: Paul Highnam
A cupboard in the Medieval Merchant's House, 58 French Street, Southampton, Hampshire, 1988, reproduced from a medieval original. The cupboard's decoration includes a painting of a ship at sea, reflecting the export trade which made Southampton wealthy during the medieval period. The house is one of the earliest surviving merchant's houses in England. It was constructed around 1290 as both a place of business and residence for John Fortin, a wealthy merchant who traded with merchants from Bordeaux, France.
