Plymouth pier, Plymouth, Devon, July 1893. The pier and promenade at Plymouth in Devon. Children lie on the sloping lawn in the foreground, and carriages wait at the entrance for custom. There are advertisements for Sunlight soap, cocoa, Beechams, and a local dyeing works among others. This pier, built in 1884 by E Birch, was quite short at only 465 feet long. It was damaged by enemy action in 1941, and demolished in 1953.
