The West Gateway, timbered beneath its brick facade, is visible beyond the lamp post, and leads to the church, which is part of a priory founded in 1123. Smithfield was a place of public excution for over 400 years, and excavations outside the west doorway have uncovered the remains of people who were burned to death.
