Roche Abbey, South Yorkshire, 1999. Artist: EH/RCHME staff photographer
Roche Abbey, South Yorkshire, 1999. Aerial view of the remains of Roche Abbey, Maltby, South Yorkshire, from the south west. Very little remains above ground level apart from the arched walls of the chancel and transepts at the east end of the church, which are still standing to their full height. The bases of the columns that once held up the nave can be seen, together with the foundations of various other buildings. A herd of cows grazes at top right. This Cistercian abbey was founded in 1147, but was plundered for building material after it was surrended to the Crown in 1538.
