'Immolation of the Jew!', 1835. Artist: G Drake
'Immolation of the Jew!', 1835. A platform with a steaming cauldron labelled Christian intolerance. Two figures stand over the cauldron, to which ascends David Salomons, refusing the Lord Mayor's entreaty to renounce the Jewish faith in order to become an Alderman. Salomons was a leading figure in the campaign for Jewish emancipation in Britain in the 19th century. He was eventually elected an Alderman in 1847 and went on to become the first Jewish Sheriff of London and Lord Mayor of London as well as one of the first two Jewish MPs. © The London Archives (City of London)/Heritage Images
