Abbey gatehouse, Cerne Abbas, Dorset, 1924-1926.Artist: E Bastard
Abbey gatehouse, Cerne Abbas, Dorset, 1924-1926. The village of Cerne Abbas grew up around a Benedictine Abbey established in 987. The abbey was closed in 1539 during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries, and today only the gatehouse and part of the abbot's porch remain. A print from Hutchinson's Britain Beautiful, edited by Walter Hutchinson, volume II, 1924-1926.
