The Choir, Sherborne Abbey, Dorset, 1924-1926.Artist: E Bastard
The Choir, Sherborne Abbey, Dorset, 1924-1926. A Benedictine Abbey was founded at Sherborne in 998 by St Wulfsin, the twentieth Bishop of Sherborne. The Dissolution of the Monasteries closed the abbey in 1539, but the local people bought the abbey church in order to use it as their parish church. The choir, famous for its fan-vaulting, was rebuilt in Perpendicular style in the 15th century. A print from Hutchinson's Britain Beautiful, edited by Walter Hutchinson, volume II, 1924-1926.
