Thomas Smith Super 10 earth mover working at the Shell Plant, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, 1961. Thomas Smith & Sons can trace their origins back to 1820 when the company was created by a group of millwrights. By 1840 most of the machines being produced were cranes ranging from 1/2 tonne to 10 tonnes. By 1861, Thomas Smith, one of the founder David Smith, had taken control and he ran the company as a partnership with his sons until he died in 1902, His sons incorporated the company in 1918.
