Control room at Manvers coal preparation plant, near Rotherham, South Yorkshire, 1956. Artist: Michael Walters
Control room at Manvers coal preparation plant, near Rotherham, South Yorkshire, 1956. Manvers was the largest industrial site in Europe at the time and it was said that living under its shadow was equivalent to smoking five cigarettes a day. The site was closed and demolished in the 1980s and the site later became home to the largest warehouse complex in Europe, belonging to the Next Group, as well as home to many customer call centres including those of PowerGen, Ikea and T-Mobile.
