George Schonhut's butcher's shop in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, 1955. Artist: Michael Walters
George Schonhut's butcher's shop, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, 1955. The window of George Schonhut's butcher's shop in All Saints Square in Rotherham, showing a traditional range of meat products and a range of continental and specifically German sausages which must have been an unusual sight only one year after rationing ended. Mr Schonhut's family originated from the German town of Obernhof. The Family settled in Mexborough in South Yorkshire in the years prior to World War I. Despite some persecution stemming from the German origins of his name, Mr Schonhut refused to anglicise the family name. The butchery business flourished for three geneations as both retailers and as a wholesaler to other businesses in the area..
