Coopering, making whiskey barrels at Wiley & Co, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, 1961. Artist: Michael Walters
Coopering, making whiskey barrels at Wiley & Co, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, 1961. The photograph shows a worker from the bonded warehouse hammering the rings into place on a barrel. These rings hold the individual sections of the barrel compressed and in turn, the fluid inside swells the wood to create a a leakproof vessel. A lot of the barrels used by the whisky industry in the UK were obtained second hand from the Bourbon industry in the US.
