Tractor unit pulling an earth grading machine at a site near Rotherham, South Yorkshire, 1954. Artist: Michael Walters
Tractor unit pulling an earth grading machine at a site near Rotherham, South Yorkshire, 1954. The Allis-Chalmers HD10W Tractor/Bulldozer was introduced in 1940 and approximately 1760 HD-10W units were used by the US military during World War II. The HD-10 continued to be manufactured until 1950. An identical machine can be seen in the background. The HD-10W was the wide-track version of the HD-10, with a 74 inch gauge. Models produced during World War II (until s/n 5574) had tracks with 32 links and five rollers. The reliability of the HD10W in military service moved Allis-Chalmers forward as a producer of tractors following the war. Keppel's Column can be seen in the distance. This is a folly built by John Carr in 1778 and named after Admiral Augustus Keppel, in memory of his court martial acquittal.
