Jacob Adler, famous Yiddish actor, known as the Great Eagle, c1900. Adler was born in Russia and emigrated to England in the late 19th century to escape the pogroms. He later moved to the United States where he built the Grand Theatre in New York and performed in Yiddish. Thousands of immigrant Jews attended his funeral in 1926.
