Tsar Peter I of Russia working on an East Indiaman, Amsterdam docks, Netherlands, 1697 (c1870). The Tsar was given the opportunity to gain practical experience in the largest shipyard in the world, belonging to the Dutch East India Company, for a period of four months. His experiences were formative of his policy to modernise all aspects of Russia's society, infantry and military.
