The Battle of Sluys, 24th June 1340.
The Battle of Sluys, 24th June 1340. The naval Battle of Sluys was one of the opening conflicts of the Hundred Years' War. It is significant as it resulted in the destruction of most of France's fleet ensuring that the remainder of the war would mostly be fought in France and not carried over to an invasion of England. From Cassell's Illustrated History of England.
