King Richard II appeases the rebels on the death of Wat Tyler, Smithfield, 19th century.Artist: Charles Grignion
King Richard II (1367-1400) appeases the rebels on the death of Wat Tyler in Smithfield, 19th century. Wat Tyler (1360-1381) was the leader of the Peasant's Revolt, a rebellion that marked the beginning of the end of serfdom in medieval England. It led to calls for the reform of feudalism and an increase in rights for the serf class. Engraved for Chamberlain's History of London.
