Soviet leader Josef Stalin with his second wife Nadezhda Alliluyeva, late 1920s. Nadezhda Alliluyeva (1901-1932) married Stalin (1879-1953) in 1919. Her death was officially attributed to appendicitis, but it is generally accepted that she committed suicide. Stalin was reportedly highly abusive toward Nadezhda in the latter years of their marriage. From a private collection.
