Russian opera singer Feodor Chaliapin with composer and pianist Sergei Rachmaninov, c1890. Chaliapin (1873-1938) had a powerful bass voice, and was one of the foremost Russian opera singers of the 20th century. Rachmaninov (1873-1943) was considered one of the finest pianists of his time and is regarded as one of the last great composers of the Romantic traditon in Russian classical music.
