Yuri Gagarin, Russian cosmonaut, 1961. Gagarin (1934-1968) became the first man in space when he orbited the Earth aboard Vostok 1 on 12 April 1961. He was killed in a plane crash while on a routine training flight on 27 March 1968. Found in the collection of the Russian State Film and Photo Archive, Krasnogorsk.
