'Portrait of Francois de Valois, Duke of Alencon', late 1560s. Francis, Duke of Anjou and Alencon (1555-1584) was the youngest son of Henry II of France and Catherine de' Medici. He became heir to the French throne after the accession of his brother, Henry III, in 1576, but died of malaria in 1584. Found in the collection of the State Hermitage, St Petersburg.
