Tynemouth Priory, Northumberland, 1924-1926. Artist: Francis Frith & Co
Tynemouth Priory, Northumberland, 1924-1926. Tynemouth Priory was a Benedictine monastery founded in the 7th century. Three of the early kings of Northumbria were buried there. The priory was attacked several times by the Danes in the 9th century, and was destroyed by them in 875. The monastery was then abandoned until 1090, when it was re-established by Robert de Mowbray, Earl of Northumberland. It was disbanded in 1538 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. A print from Hutchinson's Britain Beautiful, edited by Walter Hutchinson, volume III, 1924-1926.
