Denis Davydov, Russian soldier and poet, c1828. Davydov (1784-1839) became a celebrity for his exploits as a guerrilla leader during Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812. He invented a genre of poetry known as 'Hussar Poetry', noted for its portrayal of hedonism and bravado in military life. Found in the collection of the State Hermitage, St Petersburg.
