Modernisation of the South Yorkshire coalfields, Cadeby Colliery, near Doncaster, 1955. Artist: Michael Walters
Modernisation of the South Yorkshire coalfields, Cadeby Colliery, near Doncaster, 1955. Civil engineers make preparations for a concrete pour on the site of the new heapstead at Cadeby Colliery. The pit sat under the shadow of Conisborough Castle and after it closed in the 1980s became the location of the ill-fated and ill-planned Earth Centre. After swallowing millions of pounds of lottery cash the ecological park closed after a year.
