Italian Corps of Eugene de Beauharnais Crossing the Niemen on 30 June 1812, (1815). Part of Napoleon's Grande Armee embarking on the invasion of Russia. Eugene de Beauharnais (1781-1824) was Napoleon's stepson. He commanded the Army of Italy from 1809 onwards and took over the command of the remnants of the Grande Armee in the latter stages of its epic retreat from Russia after the emperor and Joachim Murat had left. Found in the collection of the State Hermitage, St Petersburg.
