Laskarina Bouboulina, heroine of the Greek War of Independence, Lubok print, early 19th century. Laskarina Bouboulina (1771-1825) joined Filiki Etaireia, an underground movement plotting revolution against Greece's Ottoman Turkish rulers and fought in the war against the Turks that eventually secured Greek independence in 1832. She was killed in a family feud in 1825. Lubok (plural Lubki) prints were Russian popular prints with simple graphics portraying stories derived from literature, religion and popular tales.
