Suspended monorail, 1906. The world's first and oldest still operating, overhead monorail passenger transport system was built in Wuppertal, Germany. It was designed by the German engineer Eugen Langen (1833-1895), and was opened to the public on 1st March 1901. This picture appears to show a proposed monorail system in Strasbourg (Strassburg), part of Germany at the time.
