Stokesay Castle, Shropshire, 1959. Stokesay Castle is the best preserved 13th century manor house in England. It was fortified by Lawrence de Ludlow, a wool merchant who died in 1294. The strong south tower is defensive in aspect, the west range includes the Great Hall and domestic appartments. The half-timbered gatehouse was added in 1620.
