The Midland Hotel, Morecambe, Lancashire, 1999. Artist: P Williams
The Midland Hotel, Morecambe, Lancashire, 1999. Opened in 1933, the Midland Hotel was designed by Oliver Hill in Art Deco style for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. In the 1930s it became the place to stay for wealthy holidaymakers in the North of England. It was requisitioned by the government to serve as a military hospital after war broke out in 1939, but when peace returned Morecambe and the Midland's popularity were on the wane. The hotel was sold by the railway in 1952 and changed hands several times afterwards. The building became increasingly run down until it was acquired in 2006 by Urban Splash, a Manchester-based developer, who completely renovated the hotel before re-opening it in 2008.
