The keep of Pendennis Castle, Cornwall, at sunset, 1997. Artist: N Corrie
The keep of Pendennis Castle, Cornwall, at sunset, 1997. The original castle consisted of the keep, seen here against the sunset, which provided a series of gun platforms to protect Falmouth harbour and lodging for the governor. Pendennis Castle was begun in 1540 as part of Henry VIII's defence of the south coast. A large enclosing fortress was added in Elizabeth I's reign.
