War shelter at Pendennis Castle, Falmouth, Cornwall, 1998. A reconstruction of the World War I shelter, with hammocks for the soldiers slung from the ceiling and a meal of stew served out on the refectory table. Pendennis Castle was begun in 1540 as part of Henry VIII's defence of the south coast, and continued to serve as a military base until World War II.
