Lullingstone Roman villa, Eynsford, Kent, 1991. Artist: J Bailey
Lullingstone Roman villa, Eynsford, Kent, 1991. Here is seen the remains of the hypocaust system which heated the bath house. The Roman villa at Lullingstone in the Darent Valley was first built in the 1st century AD. It was extended and remodelled several times, and finally abandoned about 420. Christian iconography survives from the final period. The site was excavated from 1949, and its ruins preserved under a cover building.
